Context Theatre (UK) and Creative Anger (Pakistan) present with support from The British Council, Islamabad

GUPSHUP/CHAT

A multi-media, multi-lingual piece written by Jack Thorne and devised by Creative Anger actors and musicians
Director: Claire Pamment, assisted by Shoaib Iqbal (Lok Rhas) and Amina Akram (Sachet)

Two individuals in two different continents carve out a safe space for themselves, against the noise of their daily lives in a chat room - but even then they are confronted with the noise of other chatters, media bombardment, sales pitches… Does one dance with the noise or confront it?

Performed at Sachet’s Conference on Youth and Human Development at Best Western Hotel, Islamabad, 12 August 2003.

Background
The piece was written by Jack Thorne and devised by myself working with Creative Anger in Pakistan. The participants had very little experience of theatre and we had just 10 days to compile a theatre performance, using Jack’s material in conjunction with work we mutually created. Working across languages, cultures and the media- live music (tabla and flute), text projections and video clips- the project was somewhat fraught but a huge success- communicating on a range of levels and opened up a frenzied discussion between cast and audience on many issues.

Aaminah Masood (participant, Creative Anger):
"But the experience in it self was superb, mind blowing … and for me it was a once in a lifetime experience!
Though I had a very insignificant role in the play, I was present on location and I have learnt so much from my fellow performers and the directors..."

Reflections on Pakistan (Writernet, April 2004) (PDF). Claire Pamment on her first visit to Pakistan.
