Opening a suitcase of new work on Asylum, exile and displacement… 16 May 2002
Two new play readings and a piece of music performed at Moonbow Jakes Coffee Shop, New Cross, London:

Asylum by Chris Halliwell: a musical response to the reports of asylum seekers in the media.
Cellist: Gill Walshaw. Soprano: Monica.

Following a recording session that never took place, Asylum became a scored work for live music: the cello allowing a certain resonance to open string drones, possibly a nod towards the stringed instruments of Armenian folk music.

Tora Bora Interlude by Mavis Howard: A one-act play set in the Tora Bora Mountains.
Mavis Howard’s play projects us fifteen years into the future – the Western World has been ravaged by terrorist attacks, global warming has engulfed entire countries, and in the mountain complex of Tora Bora, there are those whose faith has survived, those who are still waiting for the world’s most wanted man to return.
Dramaturgs: David Lane, Katalin Trenscenyl. Performers: Sanjay Shelat, Ben Mear, Oprah Wolf.

Back and Forth translated from Horváth’s Hin und Her by Zoe Svendsen: a farce about being stuck between systems.

Back and Forth follows the aborted journey on a man stuck on a bridge between countries because he has been deported from one, and is refused entry to the other. A fast-paced comedy with sinister undertones, Context hopes to cross borders and dispel myths through the satirical and accessible form employed by Horváth. The translation is currently at workshop stage, pending revision for full production.

Director: Zoe Svendsen. Dramaturg: Claire Pamment. Workshopped by Clare Barrett, Paul Malcolm Frog Stone, Grant Gillespie, Zeynep Gurtin, James Burton, Julia Sandiford, Neil Robinson, Christopher Streeks, Christine Appella.
